The term civilian had a very high ratio of total frequency to significant collocations. Most of the collocations, once again, were from the discussion thread about Lebanon banning the movie Wonder Woman (doc 6). The others were the discussion of a beauty queen being stripped of her title for visiting Israel (Doc 12), Trump mistakenly saying Lebanon was fighting Hezbollah (Doc 8) and Saudi Arabia asking its citizens to leave Lebanon (Doc 19).
Almost all references to killing or bombing civilians describes them as innocent. It is likely that this is a common usage of the term. Much of the discussions around civilians referred to them as casualties or victims of the military or terrorist (according to the orientation of the user) groups in the Middle East. Specifically, users debated the criteria for labelling a group terrorist based on whether or not civilians were being targeted:
“If Hezbollah are "murderous dumbasses" what do you call the Israeli military which killed far more innocent civilians ? Hezbollah mostly killed military personnel. Israel mostly killed civilians. These are the real facts of the matter. And if the war is with Hezbollah, why was Lebanese civilian infrastructure being targeted?” (doc 6)
“Hamas are a terrorist group who's rockets are stopped by Israels Iron shield. This isn't a war between two counties this is one country bombing another to kill terrorists, these projectiles mainly kill civilians it isn't casualty of war it's murder. Israel don't give a shit who's rockets are stopped by Israels Iron shield.” (doc 6)
And from another conversation in the same thread:
“Hezbollah doesn't use suicide bombers against civilians or other terrorist tactics. There is a big difference between paramilitary and terrorist - Hezbollah as a terrorist organization is purely a political designation - just like the MEK being not listed as a terrorist organization in the US (because they kill Iranians so its all good)”.
“And I guess because Hezbollah is just killing Israeli civilians , it is all good too? Hezbollah has definitely used terrorist tactics. Lobbing shells at farmers because you don't like their nationality is terrorism.”
“I think you mean guerrilla tactics not terrorist tactics.” (doc 6)
Some discussions featured the term civilians in the context of specific numbers of them that die in war affected areas, since the number is often contested. Users contributed multiple sources of information to better understand the matter:
The GHM estimated ~1600 civilians dead. Admittedly that is probably on the higher end. However, the UNHRC estimated ~1400 civilians dead. The Israel MFA, which always reports the lower end of casualities, reported ~700 civilian deaths plus another ~400 of "uncategorized males" 16-50 years old, which can mean anything from militant to civilian. As for my sources... A quick google search of "IDF kills protestors" gives you news reports from Haaretz, Al Jazeera, Jerusalem Post, RT and more. (doc 6)
